SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Two-time Super Bowl Champion and former Green Bay Packer Bart Starr will be the featured guest at Augustana College's Second Annual Jeans and Jewels Celebrity Party set for Thursday, May 15.
Starr was a 17th round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in 1956 and played 16 seasons in the NFL becoming one of the greatest players the organization has ever seen. Legendary coach Vince Lombardi named Starr his starting quarterback during his first season as the Packers' head coach, and a star was born.
Starr led the league in passing three times during his career and held several NFL passing records, including the lifetime record of completing 57.4 percent of his passes over a 16-year period. He was honored three times as the Most Valuable Player – once as a Green Bay Packer MVP in 1966 and MVP of Super Bowls I and II.
After his playing career ended, Starr remained with the team he built and took on the role of head coach from 1975 to 1983. In 1977 he was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame and has won a number of awards, including the NFL Award for Citizenship and the Byron White Award. Starr and his wife, Cherry, are co-founders of the Rawhide Boys Ranch, a 500-acre campus in Wisconsin that offers one of the country's most effective youth training programs for at-risk, court-referred young men.
The event will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown beginning with a social hour at 6 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to meet and receive a photograph with Bart Starr. At 7 p.m., dinner will be served, followed by a question and answer session with Bart Starr and "The Voice of the Vikings" Jeff Fylling. The evening continues at 9 p.m. as Goodroad, Sioux Falls' favorite live band, takes the stage for entertainment and dance.
