'Barefoot Bandit' To Face Charges In Washington
July 16, 2010, 2:04 PM
MIAMI, FL -
The teenager accused in a two-year string of sometimes shoeless burglaries and other crimes that helped him gain international notoriety as the "Barefoot Bandit" is headed back to Washington state.
Colton Harris-Moore is facing federal charges there, including interstate transport of stolen property for allegedly stealing an aircraft from Idaho in 2009 and crash-landing it in Washington. The 19-year-old is suspected in about 70 crimes committed in nine states and British Columbia.
Harris-Moore appeared in federal court in Miami today, where an assistant public defender told a judge the teen was waiving his right to hearing on whether he should be transferred to Seattle. Wearing a tan jail jumpsuit, shackled at the wrists and ankles and wearing socks and sandals, Harris-Moore said nothing during the brief hearing.
He was first arrested at age 12, and has been a fugitive since escaping from a halfway house in 2008. Bahamian police arrested Harris-Moore on Sunday, after he allegedly stole an airplane from an airport in Indiana and flew it to the Caribbean island nation.
