Barefoot Bandit Still Big In Yankton

July 11, 2010, 10:00 PM by Kolbe Nelson

Barefoot Bandit Still Big In Yankton
YANKTON, SD - Colton Harris-Moore, the man known as the Barefoot Bandit and may have left his footprint in South Dakota, has been arrested in the Bahamas. He's suspected of crimes in Spearfish and Yankton.

Residents won't soon forget the Bandit's stop.

”We had heard about it and all of a sudden we had all kinds of cops with their dogs walking through the neighborhood looking for him and it was just quite the scene.” Yankton Resident Karen Hovlend said.

That's true even for those who were late to hear about the famous fugitive's visit.

”So we got here a few days later, everybody was still all excited, kept telling us we missed all the excitement, I guess we did. “ Yankton Resident Jim Donohoe said.

People the sleepy Yankton neighborhood actually welcomed the story of the Barefoot Bandit it seemed, bringing a little excitement to their normally peaceful lives.

Neighbors say Harris-Moore's crime spree through KELOLAND is still the talk of town.

”It was clear that everybody in the neighborhood was having a wonderful time.” Donohoe said.

But Harris-Moore's stop in Yankton wasn't a good time when a family came home and found a man inside the house. That's why many are relieved to hear of the Barefoot Bandit's arrest.

”Well it created a lot of excitement and anxiety, but at the same time it was actually kind of scary.” Hovlend said.

But now that the Bandit's in custody, Yankton residents can rest easier.

The 19-year-old's been on the run since April 2008. He's called the barefoot bandit because he usually left his signature barefoot mark when he moved on, but the Yankton family startled him and he ran.
