Backpack Buying Tips

Backpack Buying Tips

This time of year can be especially stressful for parents of children headed back to school soon.

While the color or character on the backpack may be important to your child, doctors say there is actually more to consider. For instance, if you have your child's name on the outside of their backpack, it could make them an easy target for predators.

"If their name is spelled out on their backpacks someone that doesn't know your child, 'Hey Joey, come this way with me,' or something like that, so they may use that name on the backpack to be able to convince your child they know them, when they really don't," Pediatrician Dr. Sara Lappe said.

How a backpack fits is another factor parents should consider:

1) Make sure the backpack has two wide straps, which will help distribute the weight more evenly.

2) The backpack should also be padded so it doesn't cause pain.

3) It's also important to make sure your child's backpack doesn't weight more than 20 percent of their weight.

4) Unsure about the size of your child's backpack? Simply check and make sure the backpack is hitting two inches above their hips when worn.
