Avera Race Implements 'No Backpack' Zone
May 2013

Following the Boston Marathon bombing, organizers of the Avera Race Against Breast Cancer are taking an extra safety precaution for Saturday’s event.

There will be a 'no backpack' zone at the start and finish lines. Backpacks will also be banned in the main-stage area at the Avera Fitness Center on Southeastern Avenue.

Organizers and law enforcement implemented the precaution last year just weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing. They have also decided to continue the restriction for the 26th annual event this year.

We’ll have details on the plan to restrict backpacks and tell you why officials hope it will keep racers, fans, and the public safe tonight on KELOLAND News.
