Authorities Suspend Search For Burglary Suspect

September 22, 2012, 6:02 PM by David Brown

Authorities Suspend Search For Burglary Suspect
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

For several hours Saturday afternoon, law enforcement searched for a burglar on the northwest side of Sioux Falls.

The search focused near the McCrossan Boys Ranch.

Shortly after 9:30 a.m., homeowners on 260th Street noticed suspicious activity at their property and called 911. When deputies arrived, they saw a man on a riding lawn mower.  As they went to investigate, the man took off and grabbed what appeared to be a shotgun.

Authorities established a one-square mile perimeter around where the suspect was last seen. They've been using resources on the ground, as well as a plane in the air to search for the suspect.

The McCrossan Boys Ranch was under lockdown for a while, but things are back to normal for that building.

Authorities wouldn't send anyone into the field because the suspect is armed. So for most of the afternoon, they've tried to get the suspect to surrender peacefully.

"We're working the field right now trying to locate him. We're working with the public address system trying to call him out, trying to encourage him to surrender. And that's where we're at right now," Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead.

As of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, authorities had suspended the search.  They say they believe the man was looking to steal copper wiring and vehicle batteries.
