Authorities Search On Ground, From The Air

Authorities Search On Ground, From The Air
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Law enforcement remain on the scene of a search for an armed burglary suspect northwest of Sioux Falls.

The situation started Saturday morning when people whose home has been broken into before noticed a door open that should have been closed.  They called 911.  When a deputy arrived, he saw the suspect take off, armed with a shotgun.

Members of the Minnehaha County Sheriff's Department, troopers with the South Dakota Highway Patrol and Sioux Falls Police Officers are taking part in the search.  They have a one-square mile perimeter established around the area where the man was last seen.  In addition to the resources on the ground, a plane is also looking for the suspect from the air.

Minnehaha County Sheriff Mike Milstead says authorities are trying to communicate with the suspect and asking him to give himself up.  He says he won't send officers into the field to search because the suspect is armed.  They have tried using tear gas in a low-lying area.  They've also sent an armed vehicle in through a slough to trample down grass.

Due to the dry conditions, a fire crew from Crooks is also on standby.

McCrossan Boys Ranch is near where the burglary was reported.  It's under a lock down until the situation is resolved.  Milstead is asking people who live near 260th Street and 471st Avenue to lock their doors and remain alert.

KELOLAND News has a crew on the scene and we'll have updates as the search continues.
