Authorities Look For Box Elder Man After Escaping Law Enforcement

Authorities Look For Box Elder Man After Escaping Law Enforcement
John Root Jr.

Authorities are asking for your help finding a Box Elder, South Dakota, man after he escaped law enforcement while they were serving a warrant.

Officials with the Pennington County Sheriff's office say when two deputies and a Box Elder police officer got to John Root Jr.'s home in Box Elder on New Year's Day, he ran to his vehicle.

Officer Nick Rosser tried to remove Root from the car but was caught in the door and dragged through the yard. Root then drove directly at deputies Jamin Hartland and David Switzer. At that point, Hartland fired at Root.

But authorities don't know if Root was injured because he and another person in the vehicle ran away after Root crashed the car across the street from his home.

Authorities are still looking for Root. They say anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact the Pennington County Sheriff's office at 605-394-2151, the Box Elder Police Department at 605-394-2151 or South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation at 605-773-3215

Officer Rosser was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

DCI is also investigating this case.
