One man is in the hospital and another is in custody following a high-speed chase in the Black Hills Monday afternoon.
The pursuit ended with a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper shooting one of the suspects.
The chase started in the Northern Hills when a trooper tried to pull the vehicle over; it finally ended just outside of Rapid City off Interstate 90 when the car crashed into a ditch near a Caterpillar dealership.
“One subject was apprehended at the vehicle, the other fled to the parking lot of the Caterpillar dealership and that’s where the shooting occurred, “ Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom said. “The only rounds fired were fired by law enforcement and that was the trooper that fired, at least that’s all we know at this point.”
As in all officer-involved shootings, the Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating to determine whether the trooper was justified in the shooting.
The suspect who was shot and injured was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital. The extent of the injuries are not known at this time.
