Attempted Murder Charge Filed In SF Pursuit

October 19, 2012, 11:29 AM by Brady Mallory

Attempted Murder Charge Filed In SF Pursuit
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Court papers offer more information about what led up to, and happened during, a high speed chase in Sioux Falls earlier this week.

Charges have been filed against the woman accused of running over a South Dakota trooper during the pursuit.  25-year-old Rachel Coleman is facing several charges including attempted murder in the first degree and her fourth DWI.

According to court papers filed in Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties, Trooper Andrew Steen tried to stop Coleman after seeing her sit through a green light and cross the center line a little after 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

After a 20-minute high speed chase, Coleman and Highway Patrol troopers pulled into a parking lot on 57th Street and Western Avenue.  Troopers and Lincoln County deputies tried to stop her car, but she hit their cars, including the front of Steen's car.  Steen got out of his car, trying to stop her.  Coleman drove past him and almost hit him.  Steen fired a shot at the vehicle, but she didn't stop and crashed into the David Jones store.  Steen walked toward the front of Coleman's car, yelling for her to get out.  Instead, she accelerated toward him and hit him.  Steen fired his gun again and Lincoln County deputies also fired shots.

Authorities say Coleman was shot, but the papers do not list how many times or where.  She was later arrested.

The impact of the crash left Steen with a head injury and a broken ankle.
