A staff member is recovering after being assaulted by an inmate at the Jameson Annex to the South Dakota State Penitentiary.
The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. Corporal Zane Mathis was punched repeatedly in the head by Inmate Carlos Green. Mathis was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital for treatment after he suffered a fractured jaw and facial lacerations.
Green, 28, was handcuffed and locked up in the disciplinary section of the prison. The Jameson Annex was locked down for precautionary reasons the remainder of the evening. It was lifted on Sunday, April 21 and the prison is fully operational.
Green is currently serving a 35 year sentence for aggravated assault, a consecutive five year sentence for eluding a police officer and a consecutive two year for sliming. All of the sentences are from Brown County.
The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the assault.
