As Other Eras End, Movie Theaters Hold On

July 14, 2013, 10:07 PM by Kellee Azar

As Other Eras End, Movie Theaters Hold On
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Many of us remember the first time we went to a movie theater; the flashing lights, the smell of freshly popped popcorn, and the coming attractions.

It's an experience bonding many families. For Carrie Houchins she brings her two step-daughters to the movies as a way to become closer.

"It's important for them to have that stability, with me coming into their lives they are able to have that stability so they are really looking forward to this," Carrie Houchins said.

With a six and nine year old she says going to movies are something they can do together.

“It’s something you can do that won’t get you distracted, that you can do together as a family away from all distractions," Houchins said.

West Mall 7 co-owner Todd Frager agrees with that, he says families help keep theaters open.

"I think it’s still an event when families go to movies and family product does really good here I think that's the thing to remember is families still drive the movie business," Frager said.

These days getting a movie can be as simple as pressing a button, swiping your credit card or clicking a mouse. But Frager says he isn't worried.

“It’s really not competitive to us, because movie fans are movie fans because people who rent from Redbox and Netflix they are movie fans. If they are movie fans they are going to come to theaters," Frager said.

He thinks these new ways to watch movies are a good thing.

"The more options people have the better for the movie business, more revenue they get the more movies they make the more fans we have and that's good for the theaters," Frager said.

While people try to mimic the movie theater experience at home, Frager thinks he offers something better.

"The big screen is hard to beat, there are a lot of good home theatres out there but it’s hard to beat the big room, big screen good quality sound still drives the movie business," Frager said.

While movies change and evolve the theater has seen its share of changes as well from film, to digital projections and 2-D to the newer Real-D.

"We get a lot of first time movie goers where the lights go down and they get excited, and it’s an experience they remember where they went to it and who they went with," Frager said.

And for Houchins and her family, it's a tradition that brought them together, and one that will keep them together.

"Because when you are our and about in the public you get more interaction with your family than if you are just sitting at home, because if you are just sitting at home you get distracted with playing with toys or doing other things," Houchins said.
