Artists Fighting Hunger

December 6, 2012, 6:47 AM by Kellee Azar

Artists Fighting Hunger
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The Artists Against Hunger event has become a popular bi-annual event to collect non-perishable items for Feeding South Dakota.

The event's taken off over the past few years and now even more artists are getting in on the fun.

Laura Smith's paintings are a way for her to express herself and a source of relaxation. But the young artist also loves getting opportunities to share her art.  That's why taking part in Artists Against Hunger was as easy for her as painting.

"It's exposure, it's nice, especially for some of the emerging artists.  It's a great place to show people, and there is a lot of traffic that night.  So you get to actually talk to people about your art work, which is a huge part about being an artist," Smith said.

Helping stop hunger and helping Feeding South Dakota is what got Smith into the event and keeps her coming back.

"It's great to converse, meet some new people and discuss art and, you know, support by bringing a canned good," Smith said.

Smith donates 50 percent of her sales to Feeding South Dakota during the event, which officials couldn't be more thankful for.

"It's such a phenomenal event and for us. It's such a unique event.  So I think we really appreciate their support and that they do this on an ongoing basis helps us when we are looking to plan for our budgets and what levels of food we will have at our local food pantry," Kerri DeGraff with Feeding South Dakota said.

And a rising need, DeGraff says artists such as Smith and all those involved with Artists Against Hunger are really what keep them going.

"In Sioux Falls I know we have a significant need; I know our local food pantry this year has seen an about 11 percent increase over what we have had the previous year.  So we continue to see increasing needs for our services and every bit of support we see shows a significant difference," DeGraff said.

The event is scheduled for Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 8th and Railroad. They are asking for a non-perishable donation.

This article has been revised to reflect the following correction:
