An artist is highlighting the work of more than a dozen community leaders in the Sioux City area by creating bronze sculptures of them for a diversity park.
Mark Avery, of nearby McCook Lake, S.D., has spent countless hours in his studio meticulously sculpting busts of people he says have been champions of equality and justice, and have helped individuals marginalized in the community.
The busts are part of the Celebrating Community Project and will eventually be placed together in a diversity park in Sioux City's downtown area. Each bust will include a plaque describing the work of the honoree.
The nonprofit foundation behind the project, along with the local chapter of the NAACP, are working together to promote the park and raise money for it.
