Arena Comes Out Ahead In Events Center Report

Arena Comes Out Ahead In Events Center Report
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Consultants say the Arena site is the best location for a Sioux Falls events center.

Professional firms hired by the city came to that conclusion based on a comparative site analysis report and an economic impact study.  The Arena site scored 85 out of a possible 100 points in an analysis. While building by Cherapa Place was recommended as a possible downtown location, it only scored 75 points in the analysis.

A few negatives pointed out with the Cherapa Place include parking, building costs and revenue. Consultants say during a general business day, parking would be a challenge for any events held in the morning or afternoon.

They also found it would be twice as expensive to build at Cherapa when compared with the Arena site; the estimate came in at $12 million while it would be $6 million to build at the Arena.

One of the biggest differences was the total revenue each location would bring in. When taking into account lodging, food and car rentals, the report shows building at the Arena site would bring in an extra $16 million when compared to the downtown site.

The city council chambers were full as the consultants presented the results of the report. The city is holding question and answer session from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday. It's at the Orpheum Theater's Anne Zabel Studio. The public is welcome to attend.
