Arctic Weather Unseasonably Mild

December 9, 2012, 5:33 PM by Ben Cathey

Arctic Weather Unseasonably Mild

We're finally getting some snow at home, after storing the snow blowers seemingly all of last year.

When we look back at 2012, drought and heat will dominate the weather talk. During much of the summer we were breaking records.

A jet stream divided much of North America, keeping all the cold air in Canada and keeping KELOLAND in the oven.

But while we had warmth in KELOLAND, the summer in the Arctic Circle was unseasonably mild.  Many have been surprised to see snow and sea ice levels retreat to record lows.

On July 12, Greenland broke a record when nearly the entire ice cap saw melting on a single day.  That hadn't been seen before, even with our technology. Polar experts worry that recovering the lost ice will be very difficult because these large shifts came in a mild year.

According to the Arctic Report Card, the growing season on the Tundra and Taiga are both increasing for small shrubs as a result of these warmer temperatures.

We saw a similar trend here in KELOLAND this year, which is one reason why we are also seeing growers who harvest climate-sensitive plants moving north.
