Another Attempted Child Abduction
June 18, 2008, 5:55 PM
There's been another attempted child abduction in Sioux Falls, the second one in as many weeks. Last night around 6 o'clock, a five year old girl told her mom that a man in the 7700 block of Ione Street in Western Sioux Falls asked her to help look for his dog.
That's when she ran inside and told her mom. By the time police got the report the suspicious man was long gone.
But this second incident has parents living in the neighborhood on edge and sitting down to have the stranger danger talk with their kids.
As a little boy enjoys the playground at Discovery Elementary, mom was once again reminded that incidents like last night's are nothing to monkey around with.
"I'm surprised it happened here," said Stacie.
Stacie, who is deaf and a stay at home mom, lives in the neighborhood. Using my notepad and pen, I asked her how concerned she was by this latest incident.
"This area is filled with kids and adults at night. I'm glad the young girl did the right thing," said Stacie.
Because she is deaf, you might think she would be extra careful with her children. She is, she tells us she never lets them out of her sight.
"I gave a good lesson to my son about it and he gave a lesson to his little sister," said Stacie.
What did she say to you? "To be careful and always to stay with my mom when I'm outside, " said the boy.
And he says if a stranger ever approached him or his little sister, they would know what to do because of the talk they had with their mom.
"Run far and tell her all about it, yeah."
"In a way, kids are getting smarter and know what to do when things like this happen," said Stacie.
Police say the two incidents aren't related, because the man in this latest attempted abduction is described as a white man between 40- and 50-years-old with gray hair. The suspect from the previous incident was described as a black man with a goatee. If you have any information on either cases, you're asked to call police.
