In a statement released on Wednesday, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard said alleged misconduct in the Governor's Office of Economic Development happened prior to his administration, and that he became aware of them earlier this year.
"Well, I'm very surprised to hear that there are allegations of misconduct in the office of economic development, and I whole-heartedly agree with the statement by the Governor that we have to take this very, very seriously," Representative Marc Feinstein said.
Representative Feinstein found out about this investigation late Wednesday evening, and feels the Governor's office is taking the right steps to figure out exactly what took place.
"We have to protect the tax dollars of our South Dakota citizens. Further, it is important that we have to make sure that all programs in the state operate above impunity and beyond reproach," Rep. Feinstein said.
In a statement to KELOLAND News, former Governor Mike Rounds says that he too "recently became aware of an investigation into some alleged misconduct as indicated by Gov. Daugaard. I believe it is appropriate that any further questions be directed to Atty. Gen. Marty Jackley."
While he cannot comment further, Attorney General Jackley says he "will confirm that requests have been made for authorities to review allegations of financial misconduct."
Daugaard also says federal authorities are conducting their own investigation and that he takes "very seriously my responsibility as Governor to protect taxpayer dollars and to ensure the integrity of state economic development programs. I am confident in the integrity of those in my administration who work at GOED, and at my direction, GOED has initiated an independent review to verify that any alleged misconduct was an isolated incident."
As for Representative Feinstein, he will wait until all the information is gathered before making any further comments on the situation.
"I don't have any inside knowledge and don't expect to have any inside knowledge until they're able to release it," Rep. Feinstein said.
