Alcester-Hudson Hosts Free Admission FB Game

August 31, 2012, 10:14 PM by Kelly Bartnick

Alcester-Hudson Hosts Free Admission FB Game
ALCESTER, SD -

It was a great night for football across KELOLAND and fans at one game got less than they bargained for.

The home opener is what teams live for, even what they practice for.

It's the beginning of the season, where everyone is still a winner. And fans are already more apt to come. But Alcester-Hudson wants more fans.

“The drought is affecting everybody. The price of food is going up. Gas is going up and what we can do to help the people in the community,” Tim Rhead said.

So getting into the game won't cost anyone here a dime.

“They said it's free. And we were like, What? Free, huh?,” Chris Stoughtenger said.

They hope the game is worth more than the price of admission.

“I have a family of three. It gets expensive with the popcorn, pop. You're spending $25 easy,” Katie Manning said.

And the school district says it’s not doing this because it suddenly has deeper pockets.

“We made cuts. We've suffered like everyone else has. But whenever we looked at the budget, we had 20,000-25,000 extra in the budget,” Rhead said.

That's why they’ve cut the admission here, no one pays. Not even the visitors. And they hope it raises attendance at all school events, not just football games.

“It's volleyball season right now and we've had a couple games so far. And the games looking full so I think it's working,” JoAnah Beeck said.

If this year's cubs team is good, filling the stands may not be a problem. But win or lose tonight, at this first game of the season this team can focus on the post-season and hopefully with a full house cheering them on along the way.

Alcester says it is taking donations for a new track to replace around its football field.
