If you plan on making a trip to Sioux Falls Regional Airport in the next couple of months, you may notice an increase in the short and long-term parking rates. That's because airport officials are looking for more parking spaces.
Whether it's for short or long term, in the next couple of months you may be expected to pay a little extra if you decide to park at Sioux Falls Regional Airport. But travelers don't seem to mind this potential change.
"I have no complaints at all if they need to raise their fees. If you're lucky enough to live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and you travel a little bit then you know how expensive it is to pay the fees that you pay anywhere else that you go," Sioux Falls resident Jean Beddow said.
"It has been so inexpensive previously and they have made a lot of improvements so it seems reasonable that the price goes up and the parking lot has a lot of cars in most of the time so obviously people use it," Sioux Falls resident Jane Kolbe said.
This summer, airport officials are looking to add 100 spaces. In two years, they may add another 500 spaces to keep up with the growth.
"We might pay $35 for days and days of parking so I am not surprised. If you're going to be building more parking spaces or parking ramps, they are talking about you know there aren't any free rides, someone is going to have to pay for it," Beddow said.
Executive Director of Sioux Falls Regional Airport, Dan Letllier says at some point they say they will have to look at a parking structure as part of their long terms plans. But that could cost them between $8 tp $10 million dollars. and that can be an expensive project to contemplate between $8-10 million.
"Raising the parking rates just a little bit to help provide some additional funding so we can set that aside for those project is really what we propose to the board." Executive Director of Sioux Falls Airport, Dan Letllier, said. "And we look at other surrounding airports around the region and the country just to get a feel for what some of their parking rates are and even a small increase here would still keep us right on par with all those other airports."
Jane Kolbe is looking forward some of the potential long term expansion projects.
"It would be great to have at least some kind of cover so if you did leave your car for a week or two in the winter time you wouldn't come back to needing a shovel just to get to the door," Kolbe said.
