Activist Probes Street Harassment Of Indian Women

August 31, 2012, 1:23 PM

The founder of an organization created to stop street harassment says gender-based street harassment can be especially jarring for Native American women because they experience higher rates of sexual assault than their counterparts who are not American Indians.

Holly Kearl is the founder of the Washington-based nonprofit organization Stop Street Harassment. She traveled to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and to Rapid City this week to talk with Native American women about their experiences.

Kearl says the women she spoke with say they will not walk on some parts of the reservation out of fear the verbal harassment could escalate. Kearl hopes to use the information she gained as part of a proposed national study looking at street harassment.
