Absentee Voting Off To Swift Start

October 14, 2012, 5:30 PM by Hailey Higgins

Absentee Voting Off To Swift Start
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

The Presidential election is less than one month away, but thousands of South Dakotans have already cast an absentee ballot in Minnehaha County.

Since September 21, 6,670 absentee ballots have been requested from the Minnehaha County Auditors office. That's up a little compared to other elections this size and on track to reach the 18,000 expected absentee ballots.

So far, 3,800 ballots have been returned or filled out in the office.

Absentee voting is available in person or by mail. South Dakota state law allows absentee voting for people who won't be home on Election Day or can't vote then for other reasons including illness or disability.

If you have a ballot that has been mailed or delivered to you, you have until 7:00 pm the day of the election to get it to the auditor's office. The deadline to vote absentee in person is 3:00 p.m. on November 6.

And it's still not too late to register to vote, if you've moved or become of age since the last election. The deadline is October 22.
