Aberdeen Treating Streets, Eyeing Storm

December 7, 2012, 6:00 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Aberdeen Treating Streets, Eyeing Storm
ABERDEEN, SD -

As it lightly snowed Friday, crews in Aberdeen treated streets and prepared equipment in case.

Even though it wasn’t a lot of snow falling in Aberdeen, it was enough to slow traffic. After the previous mild winter, drivers like Robynn Konsor weren't used to it.

"We were pretty amazed from last winter to this winter. We're pretty blessed about it," Konsor said.

Crews from the city hit the streets Friday morning as drivers made their way to work.

"We've been out salting streets and taking care of that side of it. And we'll wait and see what the rest of the storm brings here," Robin Bobzien said.

Bobzien is Aberdeen's public works director. He says crews stuck mainly to emergency routes and treating intersections Friday.

City leaders will monitor snowfall amounts and the forecast as they decide whether to issue a city-wide snow removal alert.

"The crew has had stuff in place ready to go when it needs to happen for better than a month," Bobzien said.

At this point, it's too early to tell what the city will need to do. As she and others get used to winter behind the wheel again, Konsor's plan is simple regardless.

"Drive very slow," Konsor said.

The city is starting its third winter of a newer snow removal policy. It didn't use it much last winter. But Bobzien says crews had more than enough practice the winter before so they've got it down.
