An Aberdeen man accused in a weekend shooting that wounded a woman says he was being attacked when he fired a warning shot.
30-year-old Diego Ortiz Mendez appeared in court Monday on charges of aggravated assault and reckless discharge of a firearm. He did not formally enter pleas but said in court that he was not guilty.
Authorities allege that Mendez fired a shot that hit Whitney Schaunaman in the neck about 2 a.m. Saturday. Prosecutor Chris White says she is out of the hospital and doing well. Court documents indicate the incident also involved two men.
A judge set bond for Mendez at $50,000 cash or surety.
