Aberdeen Cleans Up In Cold

December 10, 2012, 6:04 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Aberdeen Cleans Up In Cold
ABERDEEN, SD -

The latest storm system gave Aberdeen a bitter combination.

It dropped a lot of snow between Friday and Saturday, blew it around Sunday and delivered double-digit temperatures below zero Monday as people cleaned up.

People in Aberdeen have had to clear more than eight to 10 inches of snow at a time before. It wasn't the amount that was worst for Jerry Mills.

"The bitter wind and cold,” Mills said. “The sub-freezing temperatures here get a little tough on the cheeks real quick.”

He joined many citywide digging out after snow and wind combined to make their mark.

Aberdeen had its plows clearing streets Monday and contracted with others to help out as well. It started the citywide snow removal effort Sunday night and continued Monday morning and afternoon.

The city had trucks out throughout the weekend. They sanded streets Friday and plows cleared emergency routes early Sunday.

"The roads were really packed and snowy and slippery. You just had to be careful the way you were driving," Bob Heier said.

Heier says he still got around with two-wheel drive.

But some places filled in with drifts much more than others. City leaders say that’s typical when a lot of wind is involved. It tried to plow a path to blown in neighborhoods before starting the citywide removal.

When you look at it as a whole, Heier considers this a pretty average storm for Aberdeen.

"We've had worse and we've had not so much snow during the year. It's South Dakota and that's just the way it is," Heier said.

Brown County waited until the wind went down to send out its plows. It had 16 of them on the roads starting at 4:00 Monday morning and continuing through the afternoon.
