A Year For The Record Books

July 18, 2014, 5:26 PM by Grant Smith

A Year For The Record Books

It has been a year for the record books. Much of the Midwest has been experiencing a colder than average 2014 while the west coast has been experiencing a record breaking heat wave.

The National Climate Data Center created this map. It shows much of the Midwest and even parts of the south in the "Much Below Average" category. Many of these areas are three to five degrees below average for the year so far. While that is happening, much of the west coast is in the "Record Warmest" category with 2014 overall averages three to five degrees above average.

But here in KELOLAND, we are overall cooler than average but not to the level that other areas are seeing. The coldest area in KELOLAND is the Aberdeen area at 4.2 degrees below average which is the eighth coldest on record for Aberdeen. Other areas are about two to three degrees below average for all of 2014 so far.

These trends and patterns are expected to last till at least October according to the Climate Prediction Center. But this weekend, we are looking at a warming trend till we hit mid to upper 90s come Monday.
