A Viral Video Both Parties Agree On

October 31, 2012, 5:59 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

A Viral Video Both Parties Agree On
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's a viral video that South Dakota Democrats and Republicans both agree on. The video points out the contrasts between Congresswoman Kristi Noem and Democratic challenger Matt Varilek.

The video has a Mission Impossible theme and is created by the South Dakota Republican Party. And it’s getting nationwide attention on the World Wide Web.

The video is meant to highlight the differences between Noem and Varilek.

“Matt Varilek authors a document advocating a global cap and trade scheme, while Kristi Noem is managing the family farm in Hamlin County," the narrator in the video says.

"We've been getting a lot of great feedback on it and we're proud of it," South Dakota Republican Party Executive Director Tony Post said.

The video has more than 140,000 views and highlights Varilek's education at the University of Glasgow Scotland and the University of Cambridge. It also talks about his work studying cap and trade energy policies and talking about global warming.

"Matt Varilek is in Milan, Italy, speaking at another UN global warming summit,” the narrator in the video says. “Back in South Dakota, Kristi Noem receives a South Dakota young leader award from the South Dakota Soybean Association.”

Democrats say the Republican video highlights Varilek's advanced education and experience.

"I think this is a basic South Dakota success story and not something that should be mocked," South Dakota Democratic Party Chairman Ben Nesselhuf said.

Republicans say they aren't mocking Varilek's education instead they are drawing attention to his energy policies that they call ‘radical’ in the video.

"He took a great education and used it to advocate for a global cap and trade scheme, which was really the focus of this ad," Post said.

But the Democrats say the video lists Varilek's educational experience so well that some think it was produced by their party.

"I think this was a misfire by the South Dakota Republican Party," Nesselhuf said.

And that's why the video may have done the impossible, with both parties agreeing to it’s content.

Both parties say campaign donations have been rolling in ever since the video was posted.

Republicans have been able to pay for the production of the video and still have money left over.

Varilek's campaign says they've received $40,000 in donations since the video's posting.

The video is catching the eye of the Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor and MSN.
