It was a packed house at the new Wine and Canvas studio on Tuesday night.
Local Wine and Canvas owner Sarah Callahan is originally from Indiana. She became inspired by her friends on Facebook when she realized they had a hidden artistic ability.
"Wine and Canvas started back in 2007 and 2008 and I kept seeing these awesome pictures from all my friends posting all of these paintings. And I'm like, I've known you for 20 years. You cannot paint and they're like, 'Oh yes, it's Wine and Canvas' and I'm like, wine and what?" Callahan said.
With a background in finance and accounting, she decided it was time to try something new.
"I was a terrible accountant. Most accountants just want to work and not be bothered by anyone. I was out trying to get all the other accountants to interact with me and talk with my clients. So, from the get go my bosses could see Sarah should not be doing this. She shouldn't be behind a cubical wall, she should be doing something else," Callahan said.
Now, she's being recognized for doing something she enjoys.
"I've had people stop and say, you're the wine and canvas lady and I'm like, heck yeah!" Callahan said.
Wine and Canvas has been around the Sioux Falls area for about a year. Local restaurants would host events, but now they finally have a space of their own with hundreds of unique paintings people can replicate, while enjoying a beverage of their choice.
"This is just a fun and affordable time to spend with family and friends," Wine and Canvas participant Deb Evans said. "I am 59 years old today and this is probably one of the best birthdays I have had is to spend it with my number one oldest child."
"Most people when they come here, they have had a long day at work and they are trying to get away from all the other things that are going on in their life and they come here and say, I am going to create some art tonight and we help them create something that they are happy with,” Callahan said.
Wine and Canvas is located at 5031 South Louise Avenue in Sioux Falls. Click here for more information.
