A Concert To Help Canton

July 31, 2014, 7:00 AM by Stephanie Gregory

A Concert To Help Canton
CANTON, SD -

Thursday’s Concert For Canton will kick off at Jack Fox park. The concert will help kick off the 35th Annual Sioux River Folk Fest, but the money raised here will help victims of the flood.

Gaynor Johnson, one of the founders of the Sioux River Folk Fest decided to do something for his community after the June flood washed through Canton.

"The main goal of this event is to raise as much money as we can to help victims of the flood back in the middle of June," Gaynor Johnson said.

Johnson says hundreds of people still need some assistance replacing things that were lost, like furnaces, hot water heaters, and more.

"There are a lot of homes that their foundations, basements, are ruined, and they are still in the process of rebuilding that. There is a lot left to do," Johnson said.

The rest of the community is coming together for this benefit concert.

"Some of the Sioux River Folk Festival musician that are donating their time to come and perform for us so that we can raise money for those that are impacted by the flood last month," Chamber Director Lisa Alden said.

Johnson says the concert is more than just a fundraiser, but a way to show that the community can still stand strong after disaster.

"We've got a big park here, I'd like to see this place really backed with people. We're going to have food available, we have six great acts, I think the town will show up for it and I think it'll be a great night for everybody," Johnson said.

It starts tonight at 6 p.m. with six bands, food and a raffle to win a car. Each raffle ticket costs $20 and the car giveaway will be tonight at 9 p.m.
