'48 Hours Mystery' To Feature Barefoot Bandit

November 11, 2010, 9:54 PM by Perry Groten

'48 Hours Mystery' To Feature Barefoot Bandit
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Barefoot Bandit, who gained global attention with a crime spree that included stops in South Dakota, is stepping back into the media spotlight.

This weekend, the CBS News program "48 Hours Mystery" will tell the story of Colton Harris-Moore with exclusive interviews and 911 recordings of his alleged break-in in Yankton. Harris-Moore is suspected of a pair of burglaries at the Spearfish airport, a stop in Pierre, as well as threatening a family in Yankton who found him in their home. It was that frightening encounter when Harris-Moore went from a cult anti-hero to dangerous criminal.

The story of Colton Harris-Moore is a real-life Hollywood crime drama.

"This is the 'Catch-Me-If-You Can' of the 21st century," correspondent Peter Van Sant said.

Harris-Moore eluded law enforcement for two years with a massive Facebook following cheering his every move.

"This is a kid who could go into the woods and live like Rambo," Van Sant said.

But the Barefoot Bandit tarnished his idealized daredevil image when he pointed a weapon at a family in Yankton back in June.

"This is where Colton crossed a threshold.  He had a gun.  He put a laser dot on Kelly Kneifl, the dad, and said, 'If you don't leave the house, I'll shoot you.'  They called the cops.  By the time the police arrived, Colton did what he did best, which was escape," Van Sant said.

"48 Hours" has obtained the recordings of that frantic call to police.

"He was a terrifying figure and you'll hear some of that on the 911 tape," Van Sant said.

Harris-Moore's life on the run ended with his arrest in the Bahamas. But for the "48 Hours" crew, the trail of the Barefoot Bandit never grew cold.

"It was a fascinating story for us because we were always one, as I like to say, barefoot step behind him," Van Sant said.

A grand jury in Seattle indicted Harris-Moore this week on federal charges connected with the crime spree.

The "48 Hours" episode airs Saturday night at 9 p.m. Central on KELOLAND TV.
