Rather than go to jail on his girlfriend's birthday, police say a Sioux Falls man decided to lead an officer on a high-speed chase.
On Monday, police were looking for someone who'd been stealing things from cars and a tip call led them to a central Sioux Falls apartment building.
Police saw Jamil Conley leaving and tried to talk to him but he jumped in a car and took off.
Authorities say the 30-year-old man ran two stop signs and two stop lights and reached speeds up to 60 miles-per-hour.
When he finally stopped, police discovered Conley wasn't involved in the thefts. It turns out he had a suspended license and didn't want to upset his girlfriend on her birthday.
Police later arrested 24-year-old Lorenzo Portillo for the thefts. He's accused of going into cars and taking more than $1,000 worth of electronics and other valuables.
