2013-14 KELO Cup Winners

June 2, 2014, 10:40 PM by Cat Clark

2013-14 KELO Cup Winners
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

All the state titles have been won and the points have been tallied up. We have one first time winner and for the second time a tie in Class "B". Here is a look at this year's KELO Cup champions.

Last year Washington claimed the "AA" KELO Cup thanks to one of the most talented senior classes. With them gone that opened the door for another exceptional class to break through from Lincoln. The Pats trailed O'Gorman by three points heading into the state track meet, thanks in part to winning the baseball and boys tennis championships a week ago. The boys in powder blue then sat on top of the state track meet standings etching their name on this year's cup. The Patriots racked up 35 points by winning titles in the three sports mentioned as well as boys cross country, boys club soccer, and the first ever 11AAA football title.

"It's sky rocketing," exclaimed Patriots Senior RB Caden Quintanilla. "I love these guys to death and I've said it a hundred times that I would not want to win any other game without these guys. I love these guys to death and we have been talking about this since the seventh grade," he added.

Lincoln also picked up points by placing in three other sports.

Class "A" also saw a close race between rivals West Central and Madison. The Bulldogs picked up crucial points in girl's golf, baseball, and girl's track down the stretch to edge off the Trojans 18 to 16. Madison won the inaugural KELO Cup in 2012, when they beat West Central by two as well. This year the Dogs finished third in girl's track, golf, cross country, and softball. They were runner up in baseball and football. Now they can place their newest hardware next to their state gymnastics and boys’ basketball trophies.

"It feels great," Bulldogs Senior Preston Nordling said. "Every game this year everyone was rooting against us, because people don’t like winners. They want to see the winner fall down and we talk about it in practice. It feels good to prove people wrong by getting back to the state tournament and winning it again," he stated.

Finally, in Class "B" for the second time in three years there is a tie for the title. Warner entered the year as the defending KELO Cup champion and it looked like they would run away with it after becoming the first school to win back to back volleyball and girls’ basketball titles. The Monarchs were hoping that their ten points would hold up. They did, until the Ipswich girl's added five more points to their cross country title by placing first at the state track meet. That old saying 'tie goes to the runner' doesn't apply here. Both Warner and Ipswich are claiming their second cups, as the Tigers tied with White River back in 2012.

Congrats to all of this year's winners and good luck to all the schools next year. We will hand out this year's trophies at the beginning of the 2014 school year.
