2012 Sign-tific Poll

November 2, 2012, 5:55 PM by Perry Groten

2012 Sign-tific Poll
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Debates are one way to help voters decide on a candidate, yard signs are another.

We've been tallying the show of support in a Sioux Falls neighborhood that's been a good predictor of past elections.

We're back in the very same Sioux Falls neighborhood near McKennan Park where we've visited every couple of years since 2004 to count campaign signs to get a gauge on what may happen on Election Day. Let's take a stroll to start our poll.

At first, we spotted a couple signs supporting Matt Varilek.

It's not a yard sign, but we found a bushy-tailed campaign worker on a Jack-o-Lantern lunch break while on the tally.

Political divisions in the neighborhood are separated by a thin driveway as we have a Kristi Noem sign and a Matt Varilek sign next door.

And if you can't find a sign in the yard, look to the garden for a "gnome."

It's not a Varilek, but we did find a "mat."  We'll count it anyway.

Here's our final tally:  Republican incumbent Kristi Noem has 20 yard signs; her Democratic challenger Matt Varilek has 17. We also spotted one hungry squirrel, a garden gnome and a rubber mat.

We also found two Mitt Romney for President signs compared to just one for Barack Obama.

Our sign-tific poll had the correct results of the U.S. House race in 2010, as well as for the governor's race.  It also correctly predicted the high-profile 2004 senate race won by John Thune when many polls had Tom Daschle in the lead.
