1st Movie Theater Opens On Pine Ridge Reservation

November 4, 2012, 9:37 AM

KYLE, SD -

The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has its first movie theater.

Nunpa Theatre opened Friday night in Kyle after three years of planning and construction.

The theater will be showing two movies each week Thursday through Monday. This week the theater is showing "Pitch Perfect" and "Paranormal Activity 4."

The word "nunpa" means "two" in Lakota.

Theater owner Angel Reddest says it will be a much-needed source of entertainment for the reservation's residents.

Reddest and her mother, Monna Patton, are opening the theater with a loan from the Governor's Office of Economic Development. Reddest declined to say how much the loan was for.

The building was constructed specifically for the theater and contains two screens. Reddest says as many as seven people will be employed at the theater.
