SIOUX FALLS, SD -
The job market is looking up in South Dakota. Right now, according to the state labor department, there are more than 10,000 job openings across the state. That's the most since 2007. And those looking for work are feeling optimistic about their futures.
It's a good sign about South Dakota's economy. Businesses are hiring again.
"I've only been here a little over a week," Terry Margheim said.
Margheim moved here from Texas and is a skilled truck driver, but is currently unemployed.
"So far, it's hard because I haven't found one. I think the overall grade is good because there's a lot of work here," Margheim said.
"Right now in Sioux Falls and across South Dakota, we have a great variety of jobs as far as pay is concerned. The key is for people looking for work and considering pay what skills do you have," Greg Johnson with the South Dakota Department of Labor said.
Capital One Financial Corporation announced it's going to add 400 new workers once it acquires HSBC's credit card business. Johnson says a lot of those jobs might be entry level, but there are plenty of opportunities to make money and earn a decent wage in South Dakota, depending on what experience you have and what you're willing to do.
"Right now, welders are in great demand in the eastern half of the state and with the great news we've had from the financial sector, there will be both entry level and for senior associates in these call centers as well," Johnson said.
And for guys like Margheim, he's optimistic his next job is just down the road and it's in Sioux Falls.
"It's growing on me and I think I'm going to put roots down here," Margheim said.
In Sioux Falls, the average pay for customer service support, which includes a lot of positions, is $13 an hour.
