Gov. Chet Culver has sent the Legislature a $750 million economic stimulus plan he says would create tens of thousands of jobs. About one-third of the money would go toward transportation projects such as fixing roads and bridges.
In announcing the plan Thursday, Culver told reporters the Iowa can "literally work our way out of this recession."
Culver would raise the money through bonding. The governor says he's willing to compromise but wants action by the Legislature.
The package includes $250 million for transportation, $150 million for flood repairs and $175 million for projects already on the books, such as repairing the Iowa Veterans Home.
