Iowa Lawmakers Consider Cell Phone Ban

Iowa lawmakers are considering a ban on drivers using cell phones, unless they use a hands-free device.

The bill is being supported by the Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Iowa Civil Liberties Union, and some lawmakers say there is a good chance of it becoming law this year.  Violators could be fined $30.

Some groups that opposed a similar bill last year say they support the current measure because it includes all drivers instead of just minors, and contains an exemption for emergencies.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, at least five states ban using hand-held cell phones while driving. At least a dozen other states prohibit minors from using cell phones while driving.
