Three Republicans are already running against Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin next year. Secretary of State Chris Nelson, state representative Blake Curd of Sioux Falls, and former Marine Thad Wasson of Piedmont have all tossed their hats in the ring against the incumbent Congresswoman.

Democrat Herseth Sandlin has already announced her run for re-election. But right now, next November is not on the top of her agenda.

"We've got a full agenda in Congress. I work hard every day to put South Dakota's interests front and center and so I'll look forward to the campaign season next year, but right now, I'm squarely focused on doing the work for South Dakota," Herseth Sandlin said.

During the past two elections, Herseth Sandlin has beaten her opponents by a wide-margin. She beat Chris Lien by 36 points in 2008 and Bruce Whalen by 40 points in 2006, but she says she's not going to take her new challengers lightly.

"I had a very tough challenger in 2004 in the special election and the general election. I've never underestimated my challengers in any election since and I won't do so again," Herseth Sandlin said.

But right now, Herseth Sandlin says she's not going to focus on the three men that want to take her seat; instead she's focusing on the South Dakotans she represents in that seat.

"But I'm confident that if I keep working hard, putting South Dakota's interests first, continuing to do my work in a way that represents South Dakota effectively, I think the politics will take care of itself and I look forward to a healthy campaign season next year," Heresth Sandlin said.

Herseth Sandlin says she'll start her re-election campaign later next summer.
