Brown County commissioners are considering an ordinance to set requirements for pipelines that run through the county.
Commissioners asked the county planning and zoning director to see what other counties are doing and then come up with a proposal.
Ordinance supporter Curt Hohn of the WEB Water Development Association says Spink, Brookings and Clay counties are either developing or have approved such ordinances. He says the Spink County ordinance calls for pipes to be at least 0.62 of an inch thick.
Hohn, who has been critical of the Keystone crude oil pipeline being built across eastern South Dakota, says high-pressure pipelines that carry crude oil can be dangerous to buildings built too close.
