Holiday Clearing House Needs Donors

A holiday program that helps poor families put food on the table, provides Christmas gifts for their children and supplies them with everyday necessities is in need of sponsors.

For seven years, the Holiday Clearing House has been pairing families in need with donors who provide these families with endless necessities.

"A lot of times, they're just seeking things like toilet paper, laundry soap, gifts for their children, warm clothing, boots and shoes. Things a lot of us don't think much about," HELP!Line's Sara Carothers said.

Carothers says families all have different reasons for needing the gifts.

"They may have been laid off, they may have had cutbacks in their hours, may have had a medical emergency or tragedy hit their family and this year is just hard for them," Carothers said.

Here's how the program works: Needy families are matched with someone who wants to help. Once a match is made, donors are given a wish list from the family. Then donors make that wish list a reality.

"It's a very powerful experience. A lot of times for the donor to help someone who needs their help and to feel like they've made an impact," Carothers said.

But this year,  the list of needy families outweighs the donors.

"Donors, we absolutely need donors," Carothers said.

With a costs from $120 for a family of two to more than $250 for a family of five, you can help make someone's holiday a little brighter this year.

And it's easy for you to become a donor.

If you're a family needing help and want to sign up for the program, you have until November 25. Donors have until the beginning of December to sign up to help a family.
