Update
Johnson Campaign Holds Cash Advantage


Democratic Senator Tim Johnson has raised almost 23 times more than Republican Joel Dykstra in his bid to win re-election this November.



Johnson had raised a total of $4.6 million as of March 31st. Dykstra had raised a little less than $204,000.



Another Republican candidate, Sam Kephart of Spearfish, did not return calls requesting his fundraising information.

Two Republican challengers admit they can't match Democratic Senator Tim Johnson in fundraising and name recognition. But they say they hope the national clamor for change will help them beat the odds.



Johnson seeks a third U.S. Senate term as he recovers from the brain hemorrhage he suffered 16 months ago.

Little-Known Candidate's Key Issue: Illegal Immigration


The first Republican US Senate candidate to qualify for the June 3rd primary ballot says his key issue is illegal immigration.



Charles Lyonel Gonyo of Trent says he spent the last 12 years fighting illegal immigration.

Gonyo says he'll be the only candidate, "that's pro-American."



Gonyo says he attended South Dakota State University and that he worked as a veterinarian before focusing on illegal immigration.

Johnson Files For Third Senate Term


Democrat Tim Johnson has filed his official nominating petition to seek a third term in the U.S. Senate.



According to the South Dakota secretary of state's Website, state Representative Joel Dykstra of Canton also filed petition signatures this week to seek the Republican nomination to challenge Johnson.

Daschle: No Desire To Return To Government Job

 
A favorite pastime for political observers is to speculate about the future of politicians or former politicians.



One political blog has speculated about a 2010 rematch between former Senator Tom Daschle and Senator John Thune, who defeated Daschle four years ago.



In an interview, Daschle said, "That's not going to happen."



He also shot down speculation that he could be a replacement candidate if Democratic Senator Tim Johnson, who suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2006, had a medical problem during his re-election campaign this year.

Johnson Has Raised Over $4 Million


Senator Tim Johnson's campaign say he's raised more than $4 million for his re-election bid this year, including more than $700,000 in the final three months of 2007.



A release from the campaign said the South Dakota Democrat raised more than $2.3 million last year and has more than $2.4 million on hand.

Dykstra Begins Petition Drive


US Senate hopeful Joel Dykstra of Canton plans to kick off a petition drive today in his hometown.



Dykstra needs to get the signatures of 2,070 registered voters on nominating petitions for the Republican primary election this spring.



So far, two other Republicans have throw their hats in the ring: Bert Tollefson of Watertown and Spearfish businessman Sam Kephart.

Johnson To Appear In Vermillion


Next month, Sen. Tim Johnson plans to make his first visit to his hometown of Vermillion since his life-threatening brain hemorrhage of a year ago.



Vermillion Mayor Dan Christopherson says the Jan. 4 event will be a great opportunity to welcome Johnson home.

In a release, Johnson's office says the event is open to everyone and that the senator wants to thank them for their patience and support.

Dykstra Gears Up Senate Campaign


US Senate candidate Joel Dykstra of Canton is cranking up his campaign.



He's hired finance and communications directors and has added two consultants in his quest for the Republican nomination next June.



Dykstra is the assistant majority leader in the South Dakota House.

Johnson Announces Campaign Staff


Senator Tim Johnson's campaign announced on Monday that South Dakota native Steve Jarding will head Johnson's 2008 re-election campaign.



Jarding was hired earlier this year to the senator's legislative staff and will now assume the role of campaign manager for the South Dakota Democrat.

Corsica Man To Run For U.S. Senate

 
A Corsica man, Joseph Pengitore, has set up a Web site that indicates his intention to become an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrat Tim Johnson.



The Web site says Pengitore will run a campaign based on integrity, not good looks, special interests, political connections or wealth.
