More than a thousand people have flocked to the White House and the surrounding streets to celebrate Barack Obama's victory.
While many stood in the rain in front of the White House chanting "Obama" or "yes we can" others drove around, honking their horns.
In Harlem, thousands of people, black and white, took to the streets, some dancing, others crying tears of joy, in raucous celebration. The roar of a crowd gathered near the legendary Apollo Theater can be heard blocks away.
However, the biggest celebration was in Chicago, where more than 100,000 people filed into Grant Park to meet Obama for his victory speech.
There were celebrations from Atlanta to Oakland, California.
