Gas Tax Holiday Impact On South Dakota

A gas tax holiday aimed at helping drivers could end up hurting the state. The three major Presidential candidates have been debating doing away with the 18 cent federal gas tax you pay per gallon when you fill up your car. 


South Dakota is one of several states that gets a double benefit from the federal gas tax.

Napoli Pushed To Run For Governor


A Rapid City gun shop owner thinks state Senator Bill Napoli should run for governor in 2010.



The outspoken Republican, who announced earlier that he will not seek re-election to the Legislature, may be interested.



Businessman Jack First has put a petition in his shop, urging people to sign if they want Napoli to run for governor.

Bogus Letters Mailed To Voters

 
Secretary of State Chris Nelson says South Dakotans have been getting erroneous mailings telling them they must reregister to vote if they have changed their addresses.



Nelson says that's not true. He says people are encouraged to reregister if they move, but it isn't required by state law.

Early Primary Voting Slow


Early voting for the June third primary in South Dakota began April 22nd, but few people have flocked to the polls.



County auditors say absentee voting is light, so far. However, they note that Election Day is still a month away, and interest is almost sure to pick up.



State law no longer requires any excuse for absentee, or early, voting.

The number of active registered voters in Minnehaha County now exceeds 100,000.

Madison Recount Ends In Tie


A recount for a seat on the Madison City Commission has resulted in a tie.



After the April 8 city election, Monica Campbell had 506 votes and Scott Delzer had 505. Delzer asked for a recount, which was held Saturday.



The recount found one more vote for Delzer, ending the election in a tie.

Today is the day people can start picking up their absentee ballots for the June 3rd primary election in South Dakota.



Secretary of State Chris Nelson says he has advised county auditors to make sure they have enough ballots available, especially on the Democratic side, due to the increased interest in the presidential contest.

Voter Information Portal


South Dakota Secretary of State Chris Nelson has announced a new Internet service that lets people check their voter registration information and view the ballots they will be casting for the June 3 primary election.



Absentee voting begins Tuesday, and Nelson said the new service will allow people to study the races ahead of time.

Voters Can Register At State Health Clinics


Community health clinics in South Dakota are adding a service to the care they already offer: voter registration. The state's 34 clinics are launching an effort to get unregistered voters on the rolls and to the polls.



Paula Hallberg of the Community Health Care Association says the effort is aimed at convincing people that their voices matter when it comes to public health issues.

Early Primary Election Voting Starts Soon


South Dakotans can begin casting ballots in the Democratic and Republican primaries well before the June 3 primary election date. April 22 is the first date allowed by state law for absentee voting.



The 2004 South Dakota primary had a 53 percent turnout, but this year's tight Democratic presidential face may draw even more voters.

Changing Parties?


Around the country, thousands of people are changing their political party affiliation in order to participate in primary elections. 



But the Minnehaha County Auditor says that's not a common practice in South Dakota. However, some people might change for the chance to vote in the Democratic presidential primary.

Daschle Helping Democrat Recruiting


The South Dakota Democratic Party, which has been in the minority for years in the Legislature, is getting some big-name help in its effort to gain some seats.



Former Senator Tom Daschle says he's been calling people who are considering running for the state Legislature.



He says he doesn't have an official role in the state party other than being a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention but that he will help when he can.

People interested in running for public office got a crash course in managing a campaign today. 



The campaign trail can be a long road. You have to come up with a plan, raise money, gain supporters, and then you're dealing with finance laws and other rules of operation. 



Would-be candidates are learning all of those things today.

Party Chair Talks About Campaign Against Johnson

The chair of Davison County's Democratic Party says that Kirby would have had a better chance at beating Johnson than most other Republican candidates because of his name recognition. 




Dave Mitchell says it's a tough race for anyone to get into because campaigning against Johnson, because of his physical disabilities, will be a challenge. 



We've all seen how nasty political races can get.

Democrats To Gather Saturday


Democratic caucuses will be held across South Dakota tomorrow in each of the state's 35 legislative districts.



Those who are interested in becoming delegates to the Democratic National Convention in August will attend the caucus meetings.



The district caucuses will send delegates to a statewide caucus in Pierre on March 22nd, when slates of 10 potential national convention delegates and three alternates will be chosen.

Candidate Training Scheduled


South Dakotans who are thinking about running for political offices can get help with the process.



Two training sessions for candidates have been scheduled this month by the South Dakota Rural Electric Association and state Retailers Association.



The first session will be held next Tuesday in Sioux Falls and the second session will be next Thursday in Rapid City.
