No Recount In Legislative Election
There will be no recount in a primary election race between state Senator Theresa Two Bulls and state Representative Jim Bradford, both of Pine Ridge.
State Election Supervisor Kea Warne says Bradford didn't get all the paperwork in by the deadline.
She says recount requests were filed in Shannon, Jackson and Haakon counties within the required three days of the state election canvass, but Bradford missed that deadline in Bennett County.

Herseth Sandlin Files Financial Disclosures
Democratic Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin has released her financial disclosure form for 2007.
She lists assets of stocks, savings and credit union accounts, and livestock. She married former Texas Congressman Max Sandlin last year and lists his house in Marshall, Texas, as an asset, along with her Brookings house.

State Rep. Jim Bradford of Pine Ridge has requested a recount in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for a state Senate in last week's primary election.
Bradford says he's got nothing to lose, although he doubts that the recount will change the outcome of his race against state Senator Theresa Two Bulls of Pine Ridge.

Three-Way RC State Senate Race
Elli Schwiesow has jumped into a Rapid City state Senate seat race as an independent, and there's some history between the three candidates.
Schwiesow beat incumbent Stan Adelstein in the 2006 Republican primary before losing to Democrat Tom Katus in the general election.
Schwiesow in the primary race used Adelstein's opposition to an abortion ban initiative against him.

Recount Possible In Legislative Race
Democratic state Representative Jim Bradford of Pine Ridge, who apparently lost Tuesday by 26 votes in an effort to unseat Democratic state Senator Theresa Two Bulls, says he's inclined to ask for a recount.
Bradford will decide after the official state canvass on Tuesday.
Provisional ballots that were cast in the legislative district may change the official outcome, and Bradford is waiting to see how those ballots are tallied.

Legislators Fail To Swap Houses
Three members of the South Dakota House failed Tuesday in their attempts to switch over to the state Senate.
Three-term Representative Tom Hackl of Hoven lost to Corey Brown of Gettsyburg by 60 percent to 40 percent in the District 23 Republican primary.
In a battle of two Rapid City GOP lawmakers, freshman state Senator Dennis Schmidt won 59 percent to 41 percent over Representative Mike Buckingham.

Senator May Be On Ballot Despite Petition Problem
Governor Mike Rounds says he's sure state Senator Tom Dempster, a Republican from Sioux Falls, will be on the November ballot, even if he has to be listed as an independent.
State officials say Dempster's nominating petitions were incomplete and that he can't run as a Republican.
Rounds says his staff has been talking to Dempster about whether he plans to challenge the decision in court or run as an independent affiliated with the Republican Party.

Todd Herseth To Run For Legislature
Todd Herseth of Mitchell says he's running for the South Dakota Senate.
He's a brother to South Dakota congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin.
It's the first political race for the 39-year-old Herseth, who's running as a Democrat in District 20.

Napoli Won't Seek Another Term
State Senator Bill Napoli of Rapid City could run for re-election for another two-year term.
The District 35 Republican says it's time to get out of the way, so he won't run for re-election and instead will retire from politics.
Napoli first went to the capital city in 1972 and spent 22 years as a lobbyist.

Veteran Lawmaker Plans Another Run
The man who has tied the record for being the longest-serving state legislator in South Dakota isn't giving up just yet.
Representative Gordon Pederson of Wall, who is term-limited in the House, plans to run for the state Senate.
If the 80-year-old lawmaker wins, he will become the all-time title holder next January when he's sworn in.

Adelstein lost in the Republican primary that year to Elli Schwiesow, who used Adelstein's opposition to the abortion ban initiative against him.
