Walmart could challenge the petitions filed earlier this week by the neighborhood group opposed to a new store in Sioux Falls.
Members of Save Our Neighborhood turned in more than 6,000 signatures to bring the issue to a public vote. The group wants voters to decide whether officials should rezone land for a new Walmart near 85th Street and Minnesota Avenue. The group submitted about 6,300 signatures, more than the 5,100 needed.
City Clerk Lori Hogstad says Walmart officials are also keeping a close eye on the petitions. They are checking each signature to make sure it is legible, not missing any information and is from a registered voter.
"We are really pleased that the city provides a process and opportunity for people to do their own due diligence and review petitions. We are taking that opportunity and carefully reviewing what has been submitted," Walmart Spokesperson Delia Garcia said in a statement. "We feel confident that shoppers in Sioux Falls are looking for another option when it comes to affordable prices on the items they use everyday. We think we need to keep in mind that this issue was approved by the City Council on a near unanimous vote."
The company has until Monday to get back to the City Clerk.
