Twin Cities Suburb Wants Sioux Falls' Tourism

Sioux Falls, SD

Whether it's a Twins game at Target Field, or a shopping trip to the Mall of America, people in Sioux Falls flock to the Twin Cities.

"I go to my friends, then we'll go out to eat. There's a few restaurants there that are nice," Linda Napolitano said.

Dennis Hanssen makes the four hour trip three times a year.

"Usually a baseball game or a football game," Hanssen said.

And while people may go for the games, a Twin Cities suburb is hoping they'll make a stop along the way.

"I call it 'co-rompitition.'  We really work collectively together; whether someone from Sioux Falls, South Dakota comes to Bloomington and staying there or St. Louis Park. We all have our attributes and assets that may appeal to the traveler," John Basill of Discover St. Louis Park said.

St. Louis Park wants to get the word out to people in Sioux Falls about its attractions, including the lifestyle center: The Shops at West End.

"It's had a lot of positive impact locally and regionally," Basill said.

St. Louis Park also hopes to sell itself to people in South Dakota, who may not be comfortable driving in Twin Cities' traffic.

"There is a comfort level that you're staying outside of downtown in a redeveloped area that is very vibrant and very safe," Basill said.

And in the height of peak summer travel time, this community hopes that tourists give the burbs a shot at being their vacation destination.

"If we can get people to come to St. Louis Park, we know they will come back again," Basill said.

St. Louis Park is also home to the You Betcha! Minnesota-Made Festival, that includes a loon call and Minnesota accent contest.  That's held the last Saturday in July.
