Tours Of Mount Rushmore's Famous Faces Go Virtual

Witnessing the beauty and wonder of Mount Rushmore National Monument in western South Dakota is now as easy as clicking a mouse.

The National Park Service says that starting Tuesday visitors will be able to access three-dimensional models of the four presidential faces and other features of the monument through an online portal.

The project is a collaboration of the National Park Service and CyArk, a nonprofit project of the Kacyra Family Foundation based in California, which says it is committed to preserving world heritage.

The Scottish government also provided resources and technology to perform the three-dimensional documentation that uses laser-scanning technology.

In addition to allowing more access to the monument, the laser technology helps to document and preserve the granite structure.
