The record streak continues for building in Sioux Falls.
City leaders announced Thursday that Sioux Falls has a fourth straight record-breaking year of construction. In 2016, the value of issued building permits reached nearly $688 million. Last year, Sioux Falls saw $676.3 million worth of construction.
According to the city, 6 of the top 10 highest value permits were housing units. In total, 1,501 apartment units and 688 single-family homes were permitted in 2016, as well as 351 townhome units.
"If you take a look at the number of residential compared to commercial this year about 57 percent of our construction valuation is residential, which includes apartments. That compares to 42 percent. That's typically not the case. Typically commercial is going to be more than residential," Sioux Falls Chief Building Services Official Ron Bell said.
