On Saturday, men and women in the Sioux Falls area will come together to fight Parkinson's Disease. A walking event called Moving Day is a collaboration between the National Parkinson Foundation and the National Parkinson Foundation South Dakota Chapter. For a Sioux Falls woman, it is a very important day. 72-year-old Carol Pinn has battled Parkinson's for 13 years, but the disease has been with her her whole life.
"I'm the fourth generation in my family to have Parkinson's," Pinn said.
Pinn's mother, grandmother, and great grandfather had it. That is not all. Her sister and brother have also battled the disease.
"It's something I always knew I would get," Pinn said.
We typically associate body tremors with Parkinson's, but Pinn said other symptoms have given her more trouble. Not only has she dealt with depression, but she said it is sometimes it is hard for her to get the right words out when she speaks. She has also had trouble with her balance.
"You know your body's going to get worse, but you do the best you can and keep going as long as you can to make the most of your life as you can. At the time. It's kind of a day-to-day thing," Pinn said.
Pinn looks forward to the day when Parkinson's is curable. She said the Moving Day Walk, and actors -- including Michael J. Fox and Robin Williams -- bring much-needed awareness to a disease many still do not want to talk about.
"There are so many aspects of Parkinson's that need to be looked into," Pinn said.
With two children, and four grandchildren, she looks to her family for strength. Though this disease has long been part of her past and present, she is not afraid of facing her future.
"You can't let Parkinson's define you as being a Parkinson's person. You're just a person who happens to have Parkinson's and you live the best you can with it," Pinn said.
Moving Day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at Canaries Stadium. The walk starts at 10 a.m. To find out more, visit the website for the South Dakota chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation.
