SD Meeting Looks At Drug And Alcohol Courts

pierre, sd

South Dakota's judicial system is holding a symposium on special courts that handle offenders who have drug and alcohol addictions.

The two-day symposium in Pierre will include information about drug courts and DUI courts, as well as technical training for staff members of South Dakota's current specialty courts.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard and South Dakota Chief Justice David Gilbertson will speak at the beginning of the symposium on Monday.

South Dakota already has drug courts in Sioux Falls and the Black Hills, and a DUI court operates in the Pierre area.

The courts are designed to keep drug and alcohol offenders out of prison. People convicted of crimes can avoid prison if they remain clean and sober for a year. They must also complete extensive treatment services and undergo intensive supervision.
